He Zigeuner

He Zigeuner

He Zigeuner is the first of eight of the Gypsie Songs of Brahms. Lehmann brings a lot of verve to her performance of this song. Paul Ulanowsky is the pianist. When Lehmann sings "weinen, klagen, traurig bange" one can hear the lament in the tone.

Set by Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), op. 103
Texts by Hugo Conrat , from the Hungarian.
He, Zigeuner, greife in die Saiten ein! Hey, Gypsy! Strike the strings!
Spiel das Lied vom ungetreuen Mägdelein! Play the song of the faithless maiden!
Laß die Saiten weinen, klagen, traurig bange, Let the strings cry, lament, sad alarm,
Bis die heiße Träne netzet diese Wange! 'Til the burning tears wet these cheeks!
