Allerseelen

Allerseelen

All Souls' Day set by Richard Strauss as op. 10 no. 8 (1882-3) to text by Hermann von Gilm zu Rosenegg (1812-1864). This song's melody and rich accompaniment make it one of the best known Lieder of Strauss. Lehmann sang this song often and recorded it twice. This justly famous performance was recorded in 1941 with Paul Ulanowsky.

After listening Lehmann's recording, you may hear the same song recorded by Barbara Bonney, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Brigitte Fassbänder, Christa Ludwig, Jessye Norman, and Hermann Prey.

Stell auf den Tisch die duftenden Reseden, Place on the table the fragrant mignonettes,
Die letzten roten Astern trag herbei, Bring the last red asters inside ,
Und laß uns wieder von der Liebe reden, and let us speak again of love,
Wie einst im Mai. as once in May.
Gib mir die Hand, daß ich sie heimlich drücke Give me your hand, so that I may secretly press it;
Und wenn man's sieht, mir ist es einerlei, and if someone sees, it's all the same to me.
Gib mir nur einen deiner süßen Blicke, Just give me one of your sweet glances,
Wie einst im Mai. as once in May.
Es blüht und duftet heut auf jedem Grabe, Every grave blooms and is fragrant tonight,
Ein Tag im Jahr ist ja den Toten frei, one day in the year are the dead free,
Komm an mein Herz, daß ich dich wieder habe, Come to my heart, so that I may have you again,
Wie einst im Mai. as once in May.
