From Otto Nicolai's "Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor" to a libretto, after Shakespeare's "Merry Wives of Windsor", by Hermann von Mosenthal and first performed in Berlin in 1849. This recitative is from the first act. Frau Fluth (the equivalent of Shakespeare's Mistress Ford), having rece3ived Falstaff's impudent letter, rehearses her reception of the amorous Knight. Alec Robinson writes of Lehmann's "irresistible gaiety and wit" in this role and we can hear in this 1932 recording all the details of Lehmann's delivery which, while accenting the light hearted but cunning words, still provides good music, great singing.
