Euch Lüften

Euch Lüften

Euch Lüften, die mein Klagen, Elsa's aria from Wagner's Lohengrin, is sung at the beginning of Scene 2 in the second act. Elsa appears on the balcony. Unknown to her, Friedrich and Ortrud, who are out to destroy her, are nearby and plot while she sings her thanks to the breezes for bringing her hero and beloved Lohengrin to her.

Lohengrin was one of Lehmann's first real sucesses in Hamburg where she began her career. This recording was made in 1930 with members of the Berlin State Opera Orchestra conducted by Frieder Weissmann.

Euch Lüften, die mein Klagen You breezes, which my lament
so traurig oft erfüllt, so sadly often filled,
euch muß ich dankend sagen, I must now thank and tell you
wie sich mein Glück enthüllt! of my new found happiness. [Ortrud & Friedrich comment]
Durch euch kam er gezogen, Through you he has come here,
ihr lächeltet der Fahrt, you smiled upon his journey,
auf wilden Meereswogen on the sea's willed waves
habt ihr ihn treu bewahrt. you have truly protected him. [Ortrud comments]
Zu trocknen meine Zähren To dry my tears
hab' ich euch oft gemüht; have I often bothered you; [the breezes]
wollt Kühlung nur gewähren may you now help to cool
der Wang', in Lieb' erglüht! my cheeks, that glow in love! [Ortrud & Friedrich speak]
Wollt Kühlung nur gewähren May you now help to cool
der Wang', in Lieb' erglüht! my cheeks, that glow!
In Liebe! with love!
