Bist du bei mir

Bist du bei mir

"If you will be with me" was for many years attributed to Bach and even assigned a BWV listing. It is now attributed to Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel (1690-1749). Text by Anonymous. Lehmann recorded this song in 1930; Paul Mania plays the inauthentic Romantic organ, but there's no attempt at "performance practice". Lehmann sings this as she would any other Lied: full of feeling for the mood and the individual words.

Bist du bei mir, geh' ich mit Freuden If you be with me, then I will gladly
zum Sterben und zu meiner Ruh'. go to my death and my rest.
Ach, wie vergnügt wär' so mein Ende, Ah, how pleasant will be my end,
es drückten deine lieben Hände for your dear hands will press
mir die getreuen Augen zu! my faithful eyes shut!
