J.B. Steane

J.B. Steane

In a Gramophone magazine (referring to Lehmann RCA CD 7 309-2-RG), J.B. Steane writes: "Whatever the qualities are that ensure life after death as a recording artist, they were surely possessed by Lotte Lehmann...there is a largesse, a generosity of tone (never going flabby or wispy) and a gift of the spirit that enrich life whenever they are listened to or called to mind. A wide repertoire adds to the appeal of the recital... "

Mr. Steane devotes a substantial portion of a chapter of his recent book: The Grand Tradition, 70 Years of Singing on Record, 1900-1970 to Lehmann's performances of opera and song.
