| New Lehmann CD release from Romophone. In January of 2000, Romophone brought out Lotte Lehmann's complete 1947 Victor recordings including those recorded in 1949. Mark Obert-Thorn did the sound reproduction and Alan Blyth wrote the booklet notes. (There are a few errors in these notes. They'll be corrected in the full review of the CD). Check out their web site at: <http://www.romophone.co.uk> This same company has produced a two CD set of the complete RCA recordings Lehmann sang from 1935 to 1940. The catalog number is Romophone 81013. Here is a sample of the reviews that set received: " The intensity of emotion and total commitment to her interpretation makes the listener feel that the score is brand new and that this is the only way it could be performed ...... For anyone interested in the development of lieder singing in the twentieth century this is mandatory listening" ARSC Journal, Fall 1996 " The lieder repertory became part of her inner reality. In the song literature she aimed to catch the living spirit. That spirit is preserved in the recent reissue of her recordings ...... Her diction was a miracle of her art. It contributed more than clarity; it was a key to her communication as a storyteller. The word stresses brought natural variety and contour to the musical line; the consonants become living tools of expression." The New York Times, Sunday, August 6 1995 | |||
