Why a Web Site for Lotte Lehmann?

Why a Lehmann Website?

Just who was she? Though you should check out the biography section for in-depth information, here's a short answer.

Lotte Lehmann was a soprano who captured the attention of Europe and then the US from the 1920s to the 1950s. There have been many great singers, but a few stand out.

In Lehmann's case it was her ability to become the character she was portraying in an opera, or to bring that same life to the words of a song. Her voice recorded well and now over 50 years since she last sang, new generations are able to appreciate the vitality Lehmann brought to every situation. Her expression could range from frivolity and flirtatiousness to solemn grandeur. There are many examples of her singing in the SoundGallery that can tell you more than any words can.

So enjoy the words and images... Lehmann's CDs continue to be released. Listen to one of the recommended CDs (in the Index section) and be transported by a singer who had no inhibitions about expression.
