| Lehmann's Song RepetoireThough it would be wonderful to have a complete list of everything that Lotte Lehmann included in her many recitals, I feel that the following list will at least allow the reader to have a better appreciation of the range of her recitals and supplement the list given in the Mega Index of her song recordings and master class songs. Further songs appear (with many duplications) in the "Missing Legacy" section under "Community" and in "PhotoGallery" in the Misc. section, page 3 in Lehmann's recital books. If you know of songs to add to this list, please let us know. In 1946 and '47 Lehmann sang the following songs in recital throughout the US. She never recorded them, however, and no "pirate" recordings exist. Of course, she also sang many songs which were recorded [see the MegaIndex] and with which she is well identified. But here are the unrecorded songs (in alphabetical order by composer). "Berberettes: Venez, Agréable Printemps, Bergere Legere, Philis, Plus Avare Que Tend, Nanette, Il était un bergere" "Come Let's Be Merry," "John Anderson," "O Whistle and I'll Come to Thee," "I know where I'm goin'" (all probably folk songs) "Chere Nuit" by Bachelet "Bescheidene Liebe,'' "Das Mädchen spricht," "Sehnsucht," Sommerabend," "Mondenschein," "Vorschneller Schwur," "Alte Liebe," "Wie Melodien zieht es," and "An ein Veilchen" by Brahms "Les Papillon" by Chausson "If Music be the Food of Love" by Clifton "La Chevelure," La Flute de Pan," "Le tombeau des Nayades," "Beau Soir," "Mandoline," "Green," and "Romance" by Debussy "Paysage" by Hahn "Plaisir d'amour" by Martini "Suleika" by Mendelssohn "Le Miroir" by Perrari "Das Fischermädchen," "Im Frühling," "Schwanengesang" by Schubert "Die Soldatenbraut" and "Der Zeisig" by Schumann "Ruhe, meine Seele," "Meinem Kinde," "Im Spätboot," "Befreit, " "Die Georgine," "Von dunklem Schleier umsponnen," and "Heimliche Aufforderung" by Strauss "Tu lo sai" by Torelli "Auf einer Wanderung," "Dass doch gemalt," "Wiegenlied im Sommer," "Nimmersatte Liebe," "Elfenlied," "Fussreise," "Begegnung," "Blumengruss," "Mögen alle bösen Zungen," "Der Schäfer," "Nun wandre, Maria," "Das verlassene Mägdlein," "Sterb' ich so hüllt," and "Denk' es o Seele" by Wolf Quite a list for JUST two years! Remember that this list only mentions those songs that she didn't record (either in the studio, or unknown to her, off the air). Furthermore, she listed but didn't sing: Alban Berg's "Im Zimmer" and "Die Nachtigall" Besides the (unrecorded) oddities above, I've been able to track down others from various programs from the early 1940s: "Adelaide," by Beethoven "An ein Veilchen," "Nachtigall," "Trennung," "Nachtigallen schwingen," "Unbewegte laue Luft," by Brahms "Apres un reve" by Fauré "To Electra" by Seth Felt "Fear Not the Night" and "Music I Heard with You" by Hageman "Dido's Lament" by Purcell "I Arise from Dreams of Thee" by Quilter "In the Silence of the Night" by Rachmaninoff "Blackbird's Song" by Scott. "Who is Sylvia" (in English), "Der Wanderer," "Ganymed," "An die Leier" by Schubert "Aus den Oestlichen Rosen," "Schöne Wiege meiner Leiden," Schumann "Wiegenlied" of Strauss "Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal" by William "Velvet Schoes" by Thompson "Geh', Gelieber, geh' jetzt," "Nein, junger Herr," "Schlafendes Jesuskind," by Wolf "British Children's Prayer" by Wolfe In 1948 and 1949 LL included: "Minnelied," "Nicht mehr zu dir zu gehen," "Salome," by Brahms "Nocturne," by Chausson "Le Manoir de Rosamonde," "Serenade Florentine," by Duparc "Dernier Voeu" by Hahn "Suleika" by Mendelssohn "An den Mond," "Der Wanderer an den Mond," "Die Unterscheidung," "Gott im Frühling," "Nachtgesang," "Schäfers Klagelied" by Schubert "Der Hidalgo," "Ich wandelte unter den Bäumen," "Romanze," by Schumann "Die Bekehrte," "Die Spröde," "Er ist's," by Wolf In 1936: "Last Rose of Summer" "Die Lerche" by Humperdinck, "Marie's Wiegenlied" by Reger. If you have programs from Lehmann's recitals, please scan them or photocopy them and send them to us. We'd like to compile a complete list of her song repertoire. | |||
