CyberSing 2004: See and Hear the winners

Mary Chestnut

Mary loves poetry and that is why art song is so special to her.

Mary Chesnut, soprano, an award winning local performer, wears many hats in the Honolulu music community. She has her Masters Degree in Voice Performance from the University of Hawaii Manoa.

Her passion for music comes from her parents, who were both professional musicians. Her father was a trumpet player, who soloed with the Boston Pops and her mother an accomplished oboist and pianist. She and her two brothers all are active musicians today. Mary Chesnut sang professionaly in California with Opera Pacific for two seasons before moving to Honolulu in 1996.

She has sung with the Honolulu Symphony, the Maui Symphony and the Hawaii Vocal Arts Ensemble. Ms. Chesnut is also active in the local Musical Theater community, as a performer, cellist and music director. She was most recently Carlotta in the Diamond Head Theater Production of Phantom of the Opera, for which she recieved a Po'okela nomination. Ms. Chesnut is now choir director at First Presbyterian Church of Honolulu.

Mary enjoys the beach, basketball, and the children she teaches.

Gretchen am Spinnrade (Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel)

Text by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), from Faust.

Set by Franz Schubert (1797-1828)

Meine Ruh' ist hin, My peace is gone,
Mein Herz ist schwer, My heart is heavy,
Ich finde sie nimmer I will find it never
Und nimmermehr. and never more.
Wo ich ihn nicht hab Where I do not have him,
Ist mir das Grab, It is like the grave to me.
Die ganze Welt The whole world
Ist mir vergällt. Is bitter to me.
Mein armer Kopf My poor head
Ist mir verrückt, is deranged.
Mein armer Sinn My poor mind
Ist mir zerstückt. distracted.
Nach ihm nur schau ich For him only, I look
Zum Fenster hinaus, Out the window
Nach ihm nur geh ich Only for him do I go
Aus dem Haus. Out of the house.
Sein hoher Gang, His tall bearing
Sein' edle Gestalt, His noble form,
Seine Mundes Lächeln, The smile of his lips,
Seiner Augen Gewalt, His eyes' power,
Und seiner Rede And his talk's
Zauberfluß, Magic flow,
Sein Händedruck, The clasp of his hands,
Und ach, sein Kuß! and ah! his kiss!
Mein Busen drängt sich My heart yearns
Nach ihm hin. for him.
Ach dürft ich fassen Ah, might I grasp
Und halten ihn, And hold him!
Und küssen ihn, And kiss him,
So wie ich wollt, To my heart’s content,
An seinen Küssen Under his kisses
Vergehen sollt! to swoon!
